Through discussions with the owner, we clarified the positioning of Labelhood Shenzhen as a crucial node in the brand’s system upgrade. We needed to think about how to assist Labelhood in this upgrade through spatial design, ensuring its adaptation in Shenzhen. Our task was to create a unique Labelhood atmosphere within the mall, attracting the target audience and conveying the brand’s message. The space also had to be practical, transitioning smoothly to operations while retaining and enhancing Labelhood’s brand ambiance.
Our sense of order is reflected in the proportions and nodes of the space and fixtures. “Details, when they are successful, are not mere decoration. They do not distract or entertain. They lead to an understanding of the whole of which they are an inherent part.” We aimed to achieve this natural integration, using details to deepen the spirit, create order, and convey attitude.
Materials are crucial in expressing the space’s identity. We selected various woods, embossed metal, volcanic rock, and sandstone. These soft materials set the overall atmosphere and tone of the space. We incorporated materials and furniture from Labelhood’s past Shanghai stores into this project, maintaining continuity with Labelhood’s spatial spirit over the past decade. This slightly oriental quality is very representative of Labelhood and is integrated into many space and fixture details in this store. We extracted structural elements of some fixtures, adding new forms, structures, and techniques to create a series of new site fixtures based on the old Labelhood. While innovating, we retained a delicate sense of familiarity, ensuring the unity of Labelhood’s spatial system.
“Archive-05,” “Archive-10,” “Archive-11,” and “Archive-24” are fixtures recreated from furniture in Labelhood’s Shanghai stores. “Archive-06,” “Archive-16,” “Archive-08,” “Archive-13,” “Archive-14,” “Archive-15,” and “Archive-23” are new fixtures created under this spatial language, using new materials like aluminum panels, wood structures, and stained materials. These details aim to present a higher-quality spatial atmosphere in the mall store.
We continued Labelhood’s inclusive characteristic, ensuring the space could accommodate various styles of clothing while retaining the spirit of the old Labelhood stores. We used materials like larch, matte metal, and volcanic rock to ensure the quality and presentation of materials in the space. “Creating is not just about making something new; rediscovering familiar objects is also creative.” Decoration is non-essential; creating space is essential. We wanted to blur the lines between finishes and structures, achieving a natural transition from space to fixtures.
We created the first batch of “Spatial Archives” for Labelhood, “Archive No.0 – 4,” dedicated to the ten years of Labelhood, created by co-founder Nan Lang in four old Shanghai houses. From the old Shanghai houses to the Shenzhen mall, we did not overturn any design. Instead, we redeveloped familiar objects, transferring the old store’s spatial spirit through materials, structures, and fixture details.
We placed the “Labelhood Living Room” and fitting room at the center of the space, making them easily accessible from both the outdoor and mall entrances, showcasing Labelhood’s homey atmosphere. Surrounding this center are display cabinets for brand accessories. Along the edges and the main indoor entrance, we designed different clothing racks. The wall features our partition system, while the center has movable display racks. These serve as flexible displays and temporary partitions, maintaining order in the space.
